  • Families who thrive value pregnancy and birth as a normal, physiologic process and desire to be active participants in their care. Many are committed to wellness-focused living, thoughtful preparation, and making informed decisions for themselves and their babies. For some, choosing midwifery is a natural extension of the way they already live. For others, it may be the beginning of a new wellness journey. We welcome both. What matters most is a willingness to engage, ask questions, and partner in care.

Our clients often appreciate a supportive care team that honors their goals, encourages autonomy, and provides guidance. Our clients desire freedom of movement in labor, the ability to eat and drink, to birth in positions that feel right to them, and to experience birth with minimal interruption. Unmedicated physiologic birth, uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact, and delayed cord clamping are values our families share.

Above all, the ideal client values collaboration. Midwifery care works best when families and providers walk together with openness and shared intention.

  • Malta Midwifery is intentionally small, relational, and home-centered. We believe excellent care is built on trust, presence, and continuity. Our team is close-knit, and we form deep, meaningful relationships with the families we serve. You are never just an appointment on a schedule. You are known, heard, and cared for.

All of our prenatal, birth, and postpartum care takes place in your home, allowing us to support families in the space where they are most comfortable and empowered. This model fosters connection, safety, and personalized care that adapts to each family’s unique needs.

As Lubbock-born and raised midwives, we are deeply invested in this community. We serve our neighbors, friends, and families with the same care and reverence we would want for our own.

Continuity of care is our priority. The same midwife who walks with you through pregnancy is present at your birth and continues caring for you and your baby through the postpartum season. This continuity allows for deeper understanding, safer care, and a more supported transition into parenthood.

  • Out-of-hospital birth is a safe, evidence-supported option for mothers experiencing low-risk pregnancies when attended by a well-trained midwife and supported by appropriate screening and transfer protocols. During your consultation, we carefully review your personal health history, pregnancy course, and individual risk factors to determine whether home birth is a safe option for you and your baby.¹

For low-risk pregnancies, planned home birth is consistently associated with lower rates of medical intervention, including fewer cesarean births, epidurals, episiotomies, and assisted vaginal deliveries, while maintaining comparable outcomes for healthy mothers and infants.² ³ These outcomes are closely linked to careful risk selection, continuity of care, and skilled midwifery support.

The North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) emphasizes comprehensive education and clinical training in prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care. Research from the Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA) Statistics Project, the largest prospective dataset on planned home births in the United States, demonstrates high rates of spontaneous vaginal birth, breastfeeding success, and maternal satisfaction among low-risk families receiving midwifery-led care.²

Home birth is best suited for families who desire to be active participants in their care—those who value education, shared decision-making, preparation, and personal responsibility. Birth at home is not a passive experience; it is a collaborative process grounded in communication, trust, and respect for the normal physiology of birth.

  • Complimentary consultations are held in our office space and are designed to be an unhurried, informative conversation. During this visit, we complete an initial risk assessment, review your health and pregnancy history, and discuss your hopes, values, and questions surrounding birth.

We also provide a clear overview of our model of care, including what prenatal, birth, and postpartum support looks like at Malta Midwifery. Just as importantly, this time allows both your family and our team to discern whether we are a good mutual fit. Midwifery care is deeply relational, and trust and alignment are essential.

Our goal is for you to leave your consultation feeling informed, supported, and confident whether you ultimately choose care with Malta Midwifery.

  • We are based in Lubbock and regularly serve families in Wolfforth, Shallowater, and surrounding areas. Generally, we travel within a 2-hour radius depending on monthly availability. If you’re unsure whether you are within our service area, just reach out—we’re happy to see what’s possible.

  • While our complimentary consultations are hosted in our office space, all of our prenatal and postpartum visits take place in the home, providing personalized care in the comfort of your own space. For clients more than 30–45 minutes away, we continue to utilize our office space for ease throughout the prenatal period. This in-home model allows families in Lubbock to receive all their care in one convenient, familiar setting.

  • Yes! Water is a popular tool for relaxation and pain relief during labor and birth. Research has shown that hydrotherapy can provide several benefits, including:

    • Reduced need for pain medication during labor

    • Lower likelihood of artificial oxytocin augmentation

    • Shorter average labor duration

    • Higher rates of spontaneous vaginal birth without vacuum or forceps

    • Increased likelihood of an intact perineum

    • Greater maternal satisfaction with the birth experience

Some clients choose to use their own tub or shower, while we are excited to offer EarthSide Birth Pools and Tubina Wild birth tubs for use in the comfort of your home. Our team supports families in safely incorporating water into labor and birth according to individual preferences and needs.

  • Routine laboratory work and ultrasound screening can play an important role in supporting maternal and fetal health. At Malta Midwifery, we incorporate recommended testing while honoring individualized care and informed decision-making.

    Typical testing may include:

    • Initial visit: Standard obstetric laboratory panel

    • Around 26 weeks: Complete blood count (CBC) and antibody screening, if indicated

    • 35–37 weeks: Complete blood count (CBC), antibody screening if indicated, and Group B Streptococcus (GBS) screening

    • Mid-pregnancy: Anatomy ultrasound to assess fetal growth and development

Additional laboratory work or ultrasound evaluations may be recommended based on individual health history, pregnancy findings, or personal preferences. We prioritize open communication and shared decision-making to ensure testing aligns with both clinical needs and family values.

  • Cozy spaces can be ideal for labor, offering comfort and familiarity. Even a small apartment or home often allows more flexibility than a typical hospital room, giving you room to move, set up your birth space, and create a calm, personalized environment. Our team will work with you to ensure your space is safe and supportive for labor and birth.

  • Pets are family too, and many clients have cats, dogs, or other animals present during birth. We simply ask that they have a safe, quiet space to retreat to if things get busy or loud. This helps ensure that every member of the household—including your furry family—feels secure and cared for during your birth.

  • Breastfeeding support is at the heart of our postpartum care. Our team has extensive lactation training and experience, and we’re here to guide you through those early feeding days. When needed, we also collaborate with skilled IBCLCs in our community to ensure you get the support that’s right for you.

  • If you’d like care with Malta but your own home is not available for any reason, you’re welcome to use a trusted friend or family member’s home, or even an Airbnb. We’ll work with you to create a safe, comfortable birth environment wherever that may be.

  • While no birth can be guaranteed to be complication-free, your safety and the safety of your baby are our top priorities. At Malta Midwifery, our team closely monitors labor for early signs of potential complications, allowing for timely, informed decisions if additional support is needed.

Our team maintains current CPR and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certifications, and we are equipped with medications and supplies to respond to urgent situations in the home. We also have clear, pre-planned protocols for hospital transfer if necessary, ensuring continuity of care in every scenario.

Our goal is to provide a calm, well-prepared, and supportive environment so you can focus on your birth with confidence, knowing that safety measures and professional ability are in place.

  • Malta Midwifery welcomes clients seeking a transfer of care. During your consultation, we complete a thorough risk assessment and review your health and prenatal history to determine whether a transfer is appropriate. With your permission, we will then assist in requesting your prenatal records from your previous care provider to ensure continuity of care.

  • We emphasize labor preparation, education, and continuous support as the foundation of comfort during birth. Many families choose to include a doula as part of their birth team, and we strongly encourage this additional layer of emotional and physical support. We also utilize position changes, movement, water immersion, breathwork, and other non-pharmacologic comfort measures tailored to each family’s preferences.

  • We believe pregnancy and birth are a family affair. Birth belongs to families. We welcome partners, siblings, and loved ones to be meaningfully involved throughout pregnancy, labor, and birth, in ways that feel supportive and appropriate for each family.

Children are welcome at prenatal visits and may be present during birth if the family desires. We encourage thoughtful preparation, including having a trusted support person available to care for children during labor so that their experience remains positive and secure. Many families find that including siblings fosters connection, confidence, and a deep sense of belonging during this sacred transition.

  • While both midwives and doulas offer emotional support and guidance during labor, their roles are quite different. A midwife is a licensed healthcare provider responsible for monitoring your health, your baby’s well-being, and the overall progress of your labor. A doula, on the other hand, offers continuous non-medical support like encouragement, comfort measures, and help with coping techniques. Doulas do not provide clinical care or deliver babies, but they can be a wonderful addition to your birth team, whether it is your first baby or your fourth.

  • A licensed midwife is always present at every birth. We plan for 2–3 attendants total, which may include a student midwife and/or a trained birth assistant. This team-based approach allows for continuous support, safety, and attentive care for both mother and baby throughout labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period.

  • Postpartum care at Malta Midwifery is intentionally comprehensive. We provide in-home visits at 24–48 hours, 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks (as needed), and 6 weeks postpartum. Unlike the conventional model, which often separates maternal and newborn care, we continue to care for mother and baby together as a dyad, recognizing their health and recovery as deeply interconnected.

  • We do not currently accept Medicaid or traditional insurance, and we do not communicate directly with insurance providers. We can provide receipts upon request, which some clients use to request reimbursement through health savings accounts or health share programs. A third-party service, Maggie with Napier Insurance Billing, is available to help clients with verification of benefits if needed.

  • For the most current global fee, we ask prospective clients to email maltamidwifery@gmail.com or reach out by phone (806)281-7725. A detailed document will be provided outlining what is included in care, as well as available payment plan options. We believe in transparency and are happy to answer any financial questions.
