Ultrasounds are a routine, expected part of care with Malta. We order them regularly; we order them for real clinical reasons, and we talk with you about what each one is actually looking for before you ever schedule it.
What we routinely order
An anatomy scan, around twenty to twenty-two weeks. This is the scan most people picture when they think of a mid-pregnancy ultrasound, and for good reason. It is a detailed, structural look at your baby, checking growth, organ development, and placental position. It is one of the more thorough scans in pregnancy, and it is a standard part of care here, not an optional add-on.
A biophysical profile, if your pregnancy reaches forty-one weeks. Once you pass your due date, we watch more closely, and a BPP is part of that watching. It evaluates your baby’s movement, breathing motion, muscle tone, and amniotic fluid level, and is often paired with a non-stress test to look at heart rate pattern separately, giving us a clearer picture of how your baby is tolerating the extra time.
Other scans, when something specific calls for one. Pregnancy does not always follow a single script, and imaging sometimes needs to answer a question that comes up along the way. Growth that seems ahead of or behind schedule. Uncertainty about your baby’s position later in pregnancy. Bleeding that needs a closer look. A concern raised at a routine visit that imaging can help clarify. None of this is common, but when it comes up, ordering the right scan is simply part of good care.
Can you request an early ultrasound?
Yes. If you want a dating scan early in pregnancy, or simply want reassurance before your first prenatal visit, that is something we can order for you. Being cared for by a midwife does not mean waiting until twenty weeks for your first look. It means the imaging you receive is discussed with you, ordered with a reason, and reviewed with you afterward.
Where these happen
Ultrasounds are the one piece of care that genuinely takes you outside your own home, since the equipment itself cannot travel the way the rest of your visits do. We work closely with Kingdom Diagnostics here in Lubbock for imaging, and we come with you. You are not sent off with an order and left to interpret an appointment alone. A sonographer performs the scan itself, and a radiologist reviews the images afterward and prepares a formal report, the same process used anywhere imaging is read professionally. We are there for the scan itself, and once that report comes back, we go over what it means together.
The point of all of it
Imaging is not something midwifery care avoids. It is something midwifery care uses well, ordered for a reason, explained clearly, and folded into the same relationship that carries the rest of your pregnancy. You are never left interpreting a report alone.
This post is meant to give you a general sense of how sonograms fit into care here, not to serve as medical advice for your specific pregnancy. What you actually need, and when, is something we decide together at your visits.
Where to start
If you are weighing your options and want to understand how imaging fits into midwifery care specifically, that is exactly what a consultation is for. We meet face to face, review your health history, and decide together whether this is a good fit for your family.
